Bio:

Tom White is a seasoned IoT, video and Technology expert, with over 15 years of experience in the industry. Tom has founded multiple global businesses including expert IoT and Technology Talent Solutions Provider Paratus People, the world leading IoT podcast - The IoT Podcast and The IoT Jobsite.

Starting his career studying Real-Time Computing Systems, Tom eventually branched out into the STB (Set Top Box) and Technology industry where he recognised a gap in the market for a specialist talent solutions provider in the IoT niche.

Tom is a recipient of a number of accolades including Virgin Fast Track 100 and National Business Awards. He is a member of the IoT Council, the IoT Security Foundation and the World Economic forum. He has been featured in Forbes and the Times.

How did you get to become an expert in your key topics?

Tom kickstarted his career studying computing for Real-Time Systems (CRTS) at University West of England, where he gained broad knowledge in hardware and software system deployment. Throughout his 15-year career in Technology recruitment, Tom built up his knowledge in the niche of IoT, liaising with some of the industry’s most innovative and prevalent organisations spanning across Europe and The Atlantic.

Now as a recognised Thought-Leader within the IoT and Technology space, Tom runs the world’s number one IoT podcast, where he communicates with an abundance of prominent and established leaders day to day. This has expanded his knowledge in recognising the latest industry and market trends end-to-end in the IoT and Technology space.

Who influences you on these topics?

Some of the leaders that have inspired Tom in his career are:

Klaus Schwab – Founder of World Economic Forum. The book The Fourth industrial Revolution’s teachings have greatly impacted and inspired his career, particularly around sustainability.
Rob Tiffany (IoT Thought Leader) for his pioneering work in driving IoT innovation and founding impactful organisations such as the Moab Foundation who are working to create a more sustainable planet through the application of connected intelligence.
Stephanie Atkinson for her continued work providing market intelligence and consulting services to assist company growth in IoT and Technology.
Tom has high regard for the ongoing contributions of the IoT Security Foundation whose mission is to raise the quality and drive pervasive security in IoT.

What challenges are brands facing in this space?

As an evolving industry, the challenges for IoT and Technology are fluctuating every day. However, there are three collective challenges Tom see’s the industry has consistently faced. The trending challenge that comes up again and again for brands in the IoT and technology space is security.

With such a wide range of unique IoT devices and capabilities it can be hard to find a commonplace and standard for security and it has been known for security to be implemented as an afterthought. Tom stresses security needs to be thought of as an integral part of deployment and having a set of universal standards for the ecosystem to follow will enable us to hurdle over these challenges.

Secondly, consumer demand fluctuates frequently, meaning brands are faced with the challenge of trying to keep up with the constraint of developing a solution before consumer realisation.

Attracting and retaining talent is a key challenge Tom has recognised first hand, having conversations with hiring managers within this space regularly. For businesses within the IoT industry talent is key to scaling enterprises IoT initiatives, driving innovation and widespread adoption. Finding the right talent can unlock new possibilities and drive forward IoT projects and growth strategies.

What do you think the future holds in this space?
