Rod Trent is a Senior Cloud Security Advocate for Microsoft and a Microsoft Sentinel global SME. He is a husband, dad, and first-time grandfather. He spends his spare time (if such a thing does truly exist) simultaneously watching Six Million Dollar Man TV show episodes and writing KQL queries.
How did you get to become an expert in your key topics?
I’ve worked in the IT industry for over 30 years. Many of those early years were focused on managing users and their devices – which included making sure those users and devices were protected. Security and cybersecurity represent the next phase in user and device management. The tools are different and constantly improving, but the goal is the same.
What sub-topics are you most passionate about?
A very important piece of identifying potential threats to any environment is sifting through the available logs and data and understanding those things that represent trouble. Data science is very close relative to threat hunting. Mining data for items of interest is a hobby of mine.
Who influences you within these topics?
I work for Microsoft and while I have many colleagues that I could profess to be influences and role models, it really is our customers that provide me with the most depth of knowledge. The way they use our products to build processes and solutions is admirable. I learn more from our customers than from anyone else.
What do you think the future holds in this space?
The tools used to protect environments will continue to improve through AI and Machine Learning, providing better, more comprehensive coverage.
What are your passions outside of work?
