Smart Grids are coming. With the Energy Transition in full swing, bringing the infrastructure and technology we use to keep the lights on into the 21st Century has never been more important. With external pressures, legacy systems and a deeply complex set of fast moving social and technical problems to navigate, the conversation leading this change couldn’t be of more value.

The debate around the Smart Grid has to navigate its way through everything from the effects of Climate Change to the effects of Climate Change deniers, from the politics of wind to the winds of politicians, leaving us with the difficult task of deciding who to follow, and how to get there. With this in mind, we’ve written a report focusing on the following areas:

  • How is the Smart Grid being discussed in the online space?
  • Who is influencing & driving the conversation?
  • Which are the most prominent topics?
  • Which brands are most associated with this debate?

The report below focuses on the period between 1st September 2018 to 31st August 2019.

Mapping The Community

Below is a network map showing interactions among the top 100 most engaged influencers on the Smart Grid, analysing the interactions, we identified 3 clear communities within the conversation. Giving us an indication of who is driving the debate, in what direction, and why they are involved. At the centre of the debate driving the majority of the conversations, are Journalists, Academics and Industry Professionals.

Who Are The Experts?

We also identified the top Academics, Industry Professionals & Journalists influencing the Smart Grid debate. With a little blending across the Academics and Industry Professionals group. Journalists being almost exclusively Energy Journalists and Editors towards the top of the Group, and Environment and Climate towards to the bottom.

Which Are The Key Topics?

Renewables dominating (33%) other topics within the Top 100 influencers from 1st September 2018 to 31st August 2019. Followed by Micro Grids (15%) and Smart Appliances & Edge Devices (11%) not far behind.

Which Are The Brands Most Associated With This Debate?

Overall, IEEE was the most associated brand with top 10 Smart Grid topics by the influencer community. Nonetheless, Key Brands implementing solutions such as HOMER, A.P.I. and Siemens were clearly recognised as being central to the conversation.
