Key Topics:Cloud, Edge, IoT
Location:Seattle, United States
Bio:
Dave McCarthy is a Vice President within IDC's worldwide infrastructure practice, where he leads a team of analysts covering shared (public) cloud, dedicated (private) cloud, and edge strategies. Dave’s insights delve into how cloud platforms provide the foundation for next-generation workloads, enabling organisations to innovate faster, automate operations, and achieve digital resiliency. Previously, Dave served as Vice President, IoT Solutions at Bsquare Corporation, an edge-to-cloud solutions provider where he focused on product strategy, market positioning, and solutions architecture. Dave has also had an extensive career leading global enterprise IT for several high-tech companies.

How did you get to become an expert in your key topics?

I started my career in systems administration and network engineering. Over time, that led to IT leadership positions in companies with international operations. After earning my MBA, I pivoted to product management and product marketing roles, creating and selling business-oriented IoT solutions. I’ve now entered my third act, providing market intelligence and advisory services as an industry analyst.

What topic areas are you most passionate about?

I enjoy exploring the intersection of technology and business. This requires an understanding of how things work, the impact to an organisation, and the motivations that drive investment. As the pace of innovation continues to accelerate, businesses have an incredible opportunity to automate operations, create richer customer experiences, and bring new products and services to market. This is enabled by a confluence of technology that can be deployed both in the public cloud and a variety of edge locations.

Which influencers influence you within those key topics?

Instead of any specific influencer, my opinions are shaped by listening to as many viewpoints as I can. Otherwise, it is too easy to get stuck in a single way of thinking. I often look for content that goes beyond the buzzwords and digs deeper into what they really mean.

How would you describe your offline influence?

I have worked offline with clients in several ways, including strategy sessions, product roadmap planning, market messaging, and market sizing.

If a brand wanted to work with you, which activities would you be most interested in collaborating on?

In the last year, I have given keynote presentations at virtual events, written custom whitepapers, participated in client webinars, and provided quotes for press releases.

What’s your best source of information for getting ahead of a story? What resource do you use to stay ahead of the trend?

Having a strong relationship and regular engagement with AR teams and PR firms is essential. I make it a habit to attend as many vendor briefings and events as possible.

What brands have you worked with?

Microsoft, AWS, Google, Oracle, Lumen, Verizon, T-Mobile, IBM, HPE, Lenovo, Intel, Cisco, Red Hat, VMware, Dell, Schneider Electric, NetApp, Equinix.

Which non-paid activities would you be keen to take part in if the opportunity raised your profile or delivered value to your audience?

I would be happy to provide a quote for content or news article, share or create a social post as well as speak at an event, provided it is a general industry and not a vendor event.

What are your passions outside of work?

As a life-long musician, I enjoy playing guitar and discovering new artists.

What would be the best way for a brand to contact you?

By using this form.
