Since the printing press broke onto the scene in the 15th Century, the amount of data we produce has been increasing dramatically. Through a rocky last decade, Big Data as an industry has finally matured, and now the information explosion is finally upon us, we have more data than we know what to do with…or maybe not.
With many of the questions about how to handle the velocity, store volume, and order the variety of data have been mostly solved, the industry is beginning to fix its gaze on the final two V’s of Big Data: Value and Veracity.
Which data spoke the truth and had value used to be the domain of the guru. How to get and extract it, was a luxury of those who could afford it. But with a revolution underway within Big Data, things are changing. Keeping afoot of those changes and seeing the wood for the trees however, has become a new challenge in and of itself.

Disclaimer: As ever with these lists, it must be stressed that the ranking correlates to a strong indication of influence. The individuals listed here are undoubtedly influential when it comes to driving discussion around the above key topics. Onalytica’s PageRank based methodology is used to extract influential experts on a particular topic and takes into account the number and quality of contextual references that a user receives – this allows us to identify Topical Authority (reference) – our priority influence metric. We analyzed topical authority via their social engagement on Twitter and how much influential experts were referenced in association with Big Data on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Forums, Blogs, News and Tumblr content. These calculations also take into account a user’s resonance (topical engagement) relevance (number of posts on topic, and % relevance – the proportion of their social content on the topic) and reach (number of followers).
