Climate change is, and should be a current global concern, however it’s only recently been labelled a ‘crisis’. This change in name has led to an increase in global conversations surrounding the issue. Movements such as the youth strikes, and Extinction Rebellion have manifested due to the widespread concern over the future of our planet.
The debate around climate crisis presents different views about how we should act upon it, leaving us with the difficult task of deciding who we should follow, listen to, or even believe. With this in mind, we’ve written a report addressing the following questions:
- How are Climate Solutions being discussed in the online space?
- Who is influencing and driving the conversation?
- What topics are most prominent?
- Which brands are most associated with this debate?
This report focuses on the period between 1st May 2018 to 30th April 2019
MAPPING THE CLIMATE COMMUNITY
Below is a network map showing interactions among the top 100 most engaged influencers on Climate Solutions. Analysing the interactions, we identified 3 different communities driving the conversation on topics such as Renewables, Reducing Emissions and Reforestation & Deforestation. This gives us an indication of who is driving the debate in the online space. At the centre of the debate driving significant influence are people like Katharine Hayhoe, Kees van der Leun and Mark Z. Jacobson.
WHO ARE THE EXPERTS?
We identified the top Experts, Speakers & Content Creators influencing the Climate Solutions debate. Experts include a mix of academics and analysts with significant knowledge about the issues. Event Speakers comprise of mostly activists and writers frequently being invited to share their insight at key events such as World Economic Forum and COP24. Content Creators include writers and academics who are creating highly engaged, relevant, up to date content, creating an impact with the leading stakeholders and top influencers.
WHICH TOPICS ARE MOST PROMINENT?
Climate Solutions generated 317,282 mentions among 1,942 influencers from 1st May 2018 to 30th April 2019. This is an increase of 153% in May 2019, compared to May 2018. The top 10 topics driving the Climate Solutions debate were identified below. Renewables was the most discussed topic by influencers, generating 121,097 mentions (33% of the whole conversation) followed by Reducing Emissions comprising 76,657 posts (21% of the debate).
WHICH BRANDS ARE MOST ASSOCIATED WITH THE DEBATE?
Overall, UN Environment were most associated with the top 10 environmental sustainability topics amongst the influencer community. Nonetheless, IPCC had the highest share of voice when the debate was around “Reducing Emissions”, which is the second most mentioned topic by influencers.
